Makita once again produces an absolute jewel with the Makita LS1016L miter saw. This is a very versatile machine. It weighs a mere 52lbs making it extremely mobile and easy to move. Being a 10 inch saw, it requires less table and storage space while still doing the work of a twelve inch saw. The dual rail system gives it the ability to cut wide material. But if the reach is unnecessary it can be tightened securely and adjusted to cut smaller trim. It’s a double bevel of course, so complicated crown and rafter cuts can easily be made.

Other bulky saws force you to lean down or to the side to line the blade up to properly adjust the material for your cut. Not this saw. This happens to be one of my favorite features of the LS1016L. The 15 amp motor is positioned up on the head and is really quite unobtrusive, leaving you with a clear view of the blade area. It may seem that I am calling to much attention to a simple design perk, but on the job things can get tough enough without having to deal with an obstreperous piece of equipment.

Another simple yet rare feature is the placement of the bevel dial. Instead of hiding it behind the fence like most other miter saws, Makita has put it in a very accessible place. The combination of the slim design of the head and the adjustable fence put the bevel dial in plain view of the user without having to maneuver around for a decent look.

The fence on the Makita LS1016L is quite a bit taller that those of it’s competitors. It can be tightened securely, providing a steady vertical surface that holds sizable materials. This along with the aforementioned clamp provide a stable environment for beautiful and precise cuts.

Well that’s it for now. In my next article I’ll go over the laser and some other useful features along with the specs of this miter saw.
